Nurse sentenced to 90 days

A former 33-year-old nurse originally from Howland was sentenced to 90 days in jail and placed on five years of intensive probation after pleading guilty earlier to a 48-count indictment that accused her of stealing painkillers while on the job at Hillside Hospital.

Misty Young, who now lives in Akron, had remained free on $5,000 bond until Thursday's sentencing by Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Ronald Rice.

Rice also ordered that Young perform 200 hours of community service and pay a $500 fine. The judge did allow Young to enter a Trumbull County Jail work release program.

Young, a registered nurse, was arrested on the secret indictment in April that alleged four counts of deception to obtain dangerous drugs, 21 counts of theft of drugs and 23 counts of illegal processing of drug documents.

Charges accuse the woman of stealing the drugs from Hillside and patients in the facility.

The charges were all fourth- or fifth-degree felonies that carry prison time of up to 18 months.

A prosecutor said Young started working at Hillside in April 2012, and the indictments claim that drugs went missing between June and October 2012.

The variety of painkillers included Percocet, Tramadol, Norco and Vicodin.

Prosecutors said charges were the result of a joint investigation between Howland police, Trumbull-Ashtabula Group Law Enforcement Task Force and Ohio's Boards of Nursing and Pharmacy.
